WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore Brittany Waters posted a career-high 20 points and 18 rebounds in WFU's 76-38 win over Winston-Salem State on Monday evening. The Demon Deacons are now 3-0 and the Lady Rams fell to 0-4 for 2008.
Waters had the game highs in points and rebounds while Vontisha Woods led the Lady Rams with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Wake Forest junior Courteney Morris set a career high in 3-pointers, netting four during the contest, all during the first half. Jessie Cain also hit a new career-high, netting five of seven attempts from the charity stripe.
Sarah Riddle started at the post for Wake Forest, replacing Corinne Groves who sat out as a precaution after suffering a concussion during Friday's game against Appalachian State. Riddle and WSSU's Talnesha Kee exchanged baskets to open the game and it would be the only time the score knotted during the contest.
The Deacons took their largest lead of the game in the final minutes of the regulation. Brooke Thomas added a pair of free throws to give Wake Forest a 38 point lead with 50 seconds on the clock. WSSU's Corbin Bradford countered with a layup but Jessica Bryant popped up a jumper just as the final second ticked away to retain Wake Forest's 38 point lead.
The Wake Forest defensive pressure held the Lady Rams to just 22.7 percent from the floor but Winston-Salem was able to capitalize from the free throw line, netting 16 of 20 attempts for an 80 percent mark.
The Demon Deacons added 27 of their 76 points off the 24 Winston-Salem turnovers.
Wake Forest had just 11 turnovers, the team's lowest mark since the 2007 ACC Tournament, where the Demon Deacons turned the ball over ten times against Florida State in the opening round.
On Wednesday the Demon Deacons will face their first road challenge, playing Charlotte at Halton Arena at 12 p.m.
