WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 56-36 to NC State on Sunday afternoon at the Joel Coliseum. The Demon Deacons are now 14-13 overall and 1-11 in ACC play, while the Wolfpack sits at 17-9 and 5-6.
NC State's Khadijah Whittington had a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Brittany Waters led the Deacons with 10 points and junior Corinne Groves pulled a team-high 12 boards.
Waters had another solid performance for the Deacs, logging a career-high 35 minutes and five assists in her third start of the season. The Orlando, Fla. native who sat out the first half of the season with an injury, has set career-best marks in blocks (4), points (15), rebounds (7), assists and minutes through her last three contests.
An ice-cold shooting performance plagued the Demon Deacons throughout Sunday's game, where they shot 28 percent from the floor and just 27 percent from the charity stripe, marking the team's worst free throw performance of the season.
Turnovers also took a toll on Wake Forest. The Wolfpack poured in 18 points from the 17 Deacon possession losses, while Wake picked up just five points from the 11 NC State turnovers.
Wake Forest opened the second half with a 27-22 deficit and cut the Wolfpack lead to four when Alex Tchangoue landed her first three-pointer of the night with 15:51 remaining (27-31). The Pack then charged ahead with a 13-1 run, including four free throw baskets to set the score at 28-44.
NC State's Shayla Fields, who scored eight of her 13 points in the second half, had back-to-back jumpers to give the Wolfpack a 20 point lead, their highest mark of the game, in the last two minutes of play.
Next up for Wake Forest will be the final home game of the season, scheduled for Sunday, February 24 against Miami at 1:30 p.m. The Deacons will then wrap up regular season play on March 2 at Virginia Tech.
