Appalachian State Takes Down Wake Forest, 22-6

BOONE, N.C. - Wake Forest was swept in its season series with Appalachian State, as the Mountaineers out-slugged the Demon Deacons, 22-6, Tuesday at Smith Stadium.
Wake drops to 11-7 overall with the loss. ASU improves to 11-8 on the year after winning its 2008 home opener.
The two teams combined for 14 runs over the first four innings, with each squad scoring at least one run in every inning. The Mountaineers built an early 8-6 lead through the fourth and then blew the game wide open with a five-run sixth. App State went on to score three in the seventh and six more in the eighth.
Five of the Deacons' six runs came with two outs, but Wake was unable to plate anybody after the fourth inning. Ben Terry and Weldon Woodall led Wake Forest at the plate with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Terry had two doubles on the day. Evan Ocheltree also had two hits in the game.
Wake Forest got on the board early by manufacturing a run in the first. Allan Dykstra reached on a two-out single and then stole second. Woodall drove him in with a single to center.
Appalachian State came right back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Jason Altenhof led off with a single, and Jason Rook followed with a triple to score Altenhof. One out later, Isaac Harrow launched a two-run home run to left center, putting the Mountaineers on top 3-1.
The Deacons, however, got both runs back in the second. Mike Murray was issued a leadoff walk but was quickly erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Andy Goff. One out later, Eric Williams reached base on a walk to put two runners on for the top of the lineup. Leadoff man Ben Terry responded with a double to the warning track in deep center, clearing the bases and tying the score.
The Mountaineers re-took the lead immediately in their half of the second. Andrew Franco led off the frame with a home run to left field. Two outs later, ASU added another run when Altenhof doubled and scored on Rook's RBI single.
Wake Forest tied the score again with two runs in the third. Woodall hit a one-out double, and one out later Murray followed with a single. After Goff walked to load the bases, Tyler Smith laced a single to left to score Woodall and Murray.
Appalachian State re-claimed the lead with a single run in the bottom of the third. Harrow led off with a double and then scored three batters later on a seeing-eye single from Andrew Franco.
The Deacs once again tied the score the next inning. Terry doubled to lead off, stole third and then scored on Woodall's sacrifice fly to center.
The Mountaineers countered with two runs in their half of the fourth. Altenhof, Rook and David Rubenstein loaded the bases with a single, walk and a single. Harrow then plated Altenhof and Rook when he reached on an error.
After both squads went down in order in the fifth, App State resumed the slugfest with five more runs in the sixth. Altenhof reached on a leadoff single and then scored on a double from Rook. Rook moved up on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly. With two outs and the bases clear, the Mountaineers put together another rally. Consecutive singles, a double and another single brought in three runs to push ASU's lead to 13-6.
The Mountaineers added three more runs in the seventh. Altenhof and Rook had back-to-back singles to get the rally started. Two outs later, Hobson and Jerod Faggert hit consecutive singles to keep the rally going. When all was said and done in the inning, App State had a 16-6 lead over Wake Forest.
ASU wasn't done there, however, as it plated six additional runs in the eighth. The Mountaineers got three-run home runs from both Jason Wallace and Adam Beasley.
Wake starter Brandon Johnson (1-1) took the loss. Making his second start of the season, Johnson went 3 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits and a walk.
Relievers Joel Ernst, Ryan McGrath and Eli Robins combined to give up 14 runs, 13 of which were earned, on 17 hits.
Dustin Hood saw his career-long 10-game hitting streak come to an end, as he finished 0-for-4.
ASU starter Aubrey Edens received a no-decision with three innings of work. Edens, who earned the win in the Mountaineers' victory in Winston-Salem earlier this season, gave up five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Lefty Nick Terry (2-0) picked up the win in relief. Terry allowed one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
At the plate, Appalachian State pounded out a school-record 27 hits. Altenhof finished 5-for-6 with five runs scored, and Rook was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs.
The win was App State's second against Wake Forest this season. The Mountaineers have out-scored the Deacons 40-14 in the two games.
Wake Forest returns to action on Wednesday at Elon. LHP Mark Adzick will take the hill for the Deacons, while the Phoenix will start LHP J.D. Reichenbach. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
