Men's Relay Places Second at ACC Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The men's and women's track and field team placed 10th overall at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships over the weekend.
On the women's side, Melissa Council placed fourth in the finals of the 400m dash with a mark of 55.48. Freshman Jessica Barton took a 10th place finish in the mile run, finishing in 5:05.28. Senior Caitlin Chrisman led the Deacs in the 5000m with a time of 16:55.56.
In the 4x400 relay, Michelle Loyd, Alex Gove, Melissa Council and Nicole Castronouva combined for a fourth place finish, completing the event in 3:46.89.
Jill Ahrens set a personal best and new WFU program record with a 12-01.50 pole vault performance, placing third against ACC competitors in the event.
Kevin Marion led the WFU men's track team in the opening sprint event, placing fifth in the finals of the 60m dash with a 6.82 finish, while Jon Reid followed with a third place mark in the 400m dash, clocking a time of 48.32. Allan Lunkenhemier also placed in the finals of the 400m run with a 49.33 finish, good for sixth place in the league.
Lunkenheimer, Marion and Reid teamed up with Phillip Warsaw to take second place in the 4x400 relay, combining for a 3:15.44 finish.
Freshman strider Greg Billington had solid distance performances, taking ninth place in the 5k with a 14:43.99 mark, and 10th place in the 3k with an 8:25.42 finish.
Next on tap for the Demon Deacons will be the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 14-15. Outdoor season will begin at the Clemson Combined Events meet on March 20.
