Deacons Drop Heartbreaker in Eleven Innings, 3-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Wake Forest took the first lead of the game against Virginia for the third straight time in the series but fell 3-2 in 11 innings at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers took the game and the series in the bottom of the 11th when pinch runner Corey Hunt scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to deep left field from Jarrett Parker off Deacon reliever Brad Kledzik.
Hunt was running for catcher Franco Valdes, who led-off the half inning with a double down the right field line. The game-winner came with one out.
The Deacs led early after Tyler Smith's RBI sacrifice fly scored Mike Murray, who extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single to center field to start the inning.
Virginia came back to tie the score at one with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning when David Coleman doubled down the right field line to score Dan Grovatt, who reached on an infield single.
Wake made it 2-1 in its very next at-bat.
Andy Goff singled to left field with one out and scored on a Ben Terry double down the right field line with two outs in the inning.
Goff was forced to slide head first to beat the relay throw and contorted himself around Virginia's Valdes to avoid the tag.
Virginia's Parker tied the score at two in the bottom of the seventh when his single up the middle of the infield scored Valdes.
Ben Hunter went eight innings, struck out seven and gave up two runs on six innings pitched in a no-decision.
Michael Schwimer got the win for Virginia and is now 2-1 on the season.
Murray was 2 for 4 with one run scored. Dustin Hood was 2 for 5 on the afternoon. Goff finished 2 for 5 with one run scored. Terry was 1 for 5 and drove in a run.
Wake and Virginia had nine hits apiece in the contest.
With the loss, the Deacs fall to 15-24 on the season and 7-13 in the ACC. Virginia improves to 31-11 (13-8) with the win.
The Deacs will return to action 7 p.m. Tuesday at Elon.
