WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Demon Deacon golfers Laura Crawford and Dolores White have been selected to represent the United States in two separate international events over the summer.
Crawford, a senior from Lancaster, S.C., will travel to Sun City, South Africa where 16 countries will come together to compete in the World University Games, September 1-6.
Crawford, who was selected by the National Golf Association, will be one of three players representing the U.S. Participants were selected based on their consistent play and competitive vigor throughout the past season. Each player will also be competing for individual medalist honors in addition to the team championship.
"I am very excited about playing in South Africa," Crawford said. "It is really such an honor to be chosen to represent my country in a world-class event. I am very lucky to have this opportunity."
Crawford currently ranks fifth on the Deacon squad with a 75.9 stroke average per 18 holes. The South Carolina-native posted a seventh place finish at the Landfall Tradition in October, tying the best finish of her career.
White, a sophomore, was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America to play on the All-Freshman U.S. team (now sophomore team) in the USA-China Friendship Cup in July, weeks before the start of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
White was selected last year as a freshman, but the event was put on hiatus due to concerns of defection by Chinese players to the United States.
"I am very excited about the USA-China Friendship Cup. I've been injured the majority of this year, so to have this opportunity to play this summer gives me one more thing to work toward," White said. "It's going to be a great experience, and I'm so happy that they worked it out to where we could play this year."
White holds a 75.3 stroke average in eight rounds played on the season.
