WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest will continue its current nine-game road swing with a pair of non-conference contests during the upcoming mid-week. The Demon Deacons will play at Elon on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will then travel to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup with the No. 18-ranked Chanticleers.
Tuesday's game at Elon will be broadcast live on 98.1 FM WBRF and on the Internet at www.WakeForestSports.com.
Freshmen Mark Adzick and Ryan McGrath are scheduled to start for the Deacons this week. Adzick, a lefthander, will go against the Phoenix on Tuesday. McGrath, a sidearm-throwing righthander, will start on Wednesday at Coastal. Elon is scheduled to start LHP Cory Harrilchak, while CCU will start RHP David Anderson.
Wake Forest (15-24, 7-13 ACC) is coming off a 1-2 series showing against Virginia last weekend in Charlottesville. The Deacons played well in all three games but fell just short of getting the series victory. Wake lost 4-2 on Friday, won 14-3 on Saturday and then dropped a 3-2 decision in 11 innings on Sunday.
Elon comes in to play this week at 29-13 overall and 13-5 in the Southern Conference. The Phoenix have lost five of their past six, including two of three last weekend at the College of Charleston.
The Deacons and the Phoenix were scheduled to meet on March 19 in Elon, but the game was postponed due to rain. The teams will make up the game on Tuesday, May 13, at 2 p.m.
Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Elon, 18-11. However, the Deacs have dropped two straight to the Phoenix, including an 8-2 setback in the teams' only meeting in 2007.
Brett Linnenkohl has had success against Elon pitching in his career, hitting .417 in three games. Linnenkohl has scored five runs, driven in six RBIs, and belted two home runs. Dustin Hood has hit .333 with four RBIs in three career games against the Phoenix. Charlie Mellies has pitched five scoreless innings, striking out a combined six batters with no walks, in two career outings against Elon.
Coastal Carolina, which will host the College of Charleston on Tuesday, enters the week at 33-7 overall and 10-2 in the Big South. The Chanticleers have won nine straight and 13 of their last 14 games. CCU picked up a 9-4 defeat of Wake Forest on April 2 in Winston-Salem.
The Deacons lead the all-time series with the Chanticleers, 12-10. Wake has won three of the five meetings since 2006.
Hood, Allan Dykstra and Mike Murray have led the Deacons at the plate against the Chanticleers. Dykstra has hit .313 with five RBIs, three runs, three doubles and seven walks in five career games in the series. Hood has hit .350 with six runs, three RBIs and a pair of doubles, while Murray is 4-for-9 (.444) with four RBIs and a .778 slugging percentage in three career games against the Chants. On the mound, Ben Hunter has made five appearances with three starts against Coastal. Hunter is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA and 16 strikeouts in the series.
Wake Forest returns to ACC play this weekend with a three-game set against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Friday's game will be broadcast live on SportSouth, while Saturday's game will be shown live on FSN.
