JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Wake Forest enjoyed its off day at the 2008 ACC Baseball Championship on Thursday, taking advantage of some free time in Jacksonville. As part of an outreach effort by the ACC's baseball teams, representatives from Wake Forest, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia visited Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville on Thursday. Players and coaches from Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and NC State are set to visit the hospital on Friday. The schedule allows players to visit the hospital on their off day during the tournament.
Student-athletes Allan Dykstra, Brad Kledzik, Charlie Mellies, Ben Terry, Weldon Woodall and Greg Young represented Wake Forest. Head coach Rick Rembielak and director of baseball operations Fred Worth were also part of the Deacon contingent to visit the hospital. The players and coaches met with the children and brought them signed posters from the 2008 season.
On Thursday afternoon, Wake Forest held an afternoon workout on the field at the University of North Florida. Brodie and Jason from CBS College Sports' Going Yard were on hand to talk with a few of the players. The duo featured Charlie Mellies' aspirations of becoming President of the United States, the video of which can be found here.
CBS College Sports also talked with shortstop Andy Goff and second baseman Dustin Hood about the art of turning the double play. The video feature with Goff and Hood will air at a later date.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Friday against No. 1-ranked North Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
