Severe weather in West Lafayette, Ind., resulted in the evacuation of the Kampen Course and suspension of the third round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships on Friday evening.
Wake Forest was nine over par through holes 11 to 14 for the third round and is currently in 20th place. The Deacs need to finish the third round in the top 15 to qualify for Saturday's final round.
Half of the 30 team field and three individuals (Joel Sjoholm, Jurrian Van der Vaart and Derek Tolan) finished the third round before play was suspended at 5:55 p.m. UCLA was in first place when play was halted. The Bruins fired a 298 (297-293-298=888). Clemson and top-seed Southern California were in a tie for second at 891, while Stanford was fourth with a team total of 893 (309-288-296=893). Oklahoma State was fifth (298-296-301=895). Alabama, Arizona State, Charlotte, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kent State, Middle Tennessee State, Texas A&M and Washington also played all 18 holes on Friday.
Kevin Chappell from UCLA has the individual lead with a six-under par 210.
The updated championship format begins Saturday with the conclusion of the third round starting at 7 a.m. ET with a shotgun start. All ties will be broken immediately following the completion of the third round using the non-sudden death tiebreaking procedures and the top 15 teams will advance to the fourth round. The final round will begin with tee times starting at 11 a.m.
Fourth round pairings with the revised tee times will be distributed at the conclusion of the third round.
Play was stopped at 4:15 p.m. Friday due to severe thunderstorms and resumed again at 4:55 p.m. The official suspension came at 5:55 p.m. when teams were alerted to clear the course and evacuate to Mackey Arena due to the potential for a tornado warning. The golfers were allowed to leave Mackey at approximately 7:50 p.m. after a brief coaches meeting that followed the expiration of the tornado warning.
