2008-09 Schedule
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team has set the schedule for the 2008-09 season, which includes the WFU-hosted ITA Regionals on October 22-27, as well as ten dual matches in 2009 at Leighton Stadium and the Indoor Tennis Center.
The fall slate for the Demon Deacons begins with the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. on September 12-14, followed by the ITA All-Americans in Los Angeles from September 27-October 5. The USTA Team Invitational will be held in New York, N.Y. from October 11-13.
On October 22-27, Wake Forest will host the 2008 ITA Regionals, which features the top collegiate competitors from the East region. The event is returning to Wake Forest for the first time since 2004.
"We are really excited to be hosting again," Wake Forest head coach Chad Skorupka said.
"It will be great for our athletes to have a chance to play in front of a home crowd. It's also an opportunity for us to showcase the updated lighting and surface improvements at the Indoor Center."
The Deacs will finish out the fall tournament season in Durham, N.C. at the Duke-UNC Invitational on Nov. 7-9.
The Wake Forest dual match season for 2009 includes 10 home contests, including six league match-ups.
The WFU spring campaign will begin with a weekend homestand against Richmond and Dartmouth on January 23 and 24. Other non-conference home matches include William & Mary on February 21 and Texas A&M on February 22.
On January 31 Wake Forest will head to Nashville, Tenn. to compete for a spot in the National Team Indoor Tournament at host school Vanderbilt. Qualifying teams will head to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the tournament on February 12-15.
The non-conference road schedule includes Furman on February 7, followed by Indiana and Notre Dame on February 28 and March 1. The Demon Deacons will end the non-conference season in Charleston, S.C. against the College of Charleston.
On March 18 WFU will begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC finished the 2008 season with 10 of the 12 teams ranked in the last ITA poll and placed six teams in the top 20. Georgia Tech led the league with a sixth place finish, propelled by then-sophomore Amanda McDowell, who took the NCAA singles championship, as well as ACC Player of the Year Kristi Miller, who finished her career with the Ramblin' Wreck in May. Top ACC returnees for 2009 include Clemson's Ani Mijacika, who finished the season ranked second in the nation as well as Ellah Nze of the Duke, named 2008's ACC Freshman of the Year.
Wake Forest will open the Atlantic Coast Conference lineup with a six-match homestand on March 18, leading off with the NC State Wolfpack. On March 21 and 22 the Deacons will host Boston College and Maryland, followed by Georgia Tech and Clemson on March 28 and 29. Wake will close the home season at Leighton Stadium on April 1 with North Carolina.
The second half of the ACC schedule will be on the road, starting with Florida State and Miami and April 3 and 5. The Duke Blue Devils will host Wake on April 8 and the regular season will end in Virginia with UVA on April 11 and Virginia Tech on April 12.
The ACC Championships are set for April 16-19 in Cary, N.C. The opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament will begin at campus sites on May 8 and will conclude with the final four rounds at Texas A&M.
