WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams head to Blacksburg, Virginia, for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational, which features six schools. The College of Charleston, Concord, Florida State, Montreat, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will be featured in tonight's event. The women's 5-kilometer race commences at 6 p.m., followed by the men's 8-kilometer race at 6:45 p.m.
The men's team is coming off a fourth-place finish at the North Carolina Challenge, where several newcomers to the team debuted, much to head coach Annie Bennett's delight.
"I was pleased with our young men. They're a very inexperienced group and I was pleased with how they did. They also know what they need to do to get event better," said Bennett following Saturday's meet.
The women's team finished the North Carolina Challenge with two head-to-head victories, one against Campbell and the other a one-point victory against North Carolina.
"We're really excited about our future. We feel like we're a team that's charging back onto the national level," Bennett said of her women's team.
Goran Nava, formerly of Radford, set the course record at Virginia Tech for the men's 8-kilometer race with a time of 24:28.31 on Sept. 20, 2003. To date, there is no course record for the women's 5-kilometer run at this event.
Results from the Virginia Tech Invitational will be posted on WakeForestSports.com.
