Bob McCreary, a former Wake Forest football player, was honored Friday night with the Gene Hooks Achievement Award.

The award is given by the Varsity Club and recognizes a former Wake Forest student-athlete who exhibits traits of integrity, charity, and leadership. The award is on permanent display within the Wake Forest University Athletics Department.

McCreary ('61) was a football letterman for the Deacons from 1958-60 and went on to play in the NFL. A fifth round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers, he played with the Dallas Cowboys in 1961-62 and with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL in 1963.

McCreary was the original member of the Moricle Society and a lead contributor on several capital initiatives. In 2008, Wake Forest dedicated McCreary Plaza in front of Deacon Tower in his honor.
