OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Freshman Cheyenne Woods carded a 2-over 74 in the final round of the NCAA Fall Preview to pace the 12th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team to a ninth place finish.
The Deacons carded a round 299 in the third round but was unable to move up the leaderboard. Rounds of 304 and 305 yesterday put them in ninth heading into the final round.
Head coach Diane Dailey wasn't disappointed with her team's performance this weekend.
"Overall, it was a good weekend for us," said Dailey. "I was proud of how the girls came back and played today. We had a little trouble scoring this weekend by it was a good start for our first tournament of the year. The girls are excited to get back and start working on some things to get better."
Woods, playing in her first collegiate tournament, carded rounds of 75-76-74=225 to finish tied for 26th. She made three birdies in her first 12 holes and was one-under par at one point, but a few missed shots in the closing holes led to a 74.
"Cheyenne played very consistent and very steady this weekend," Dailey commented. "She just goes about her business and she struck the bell well. This was a wonderful way to start her collegiate career."
Senior Nannette Hill opened with a 79 in the first round but rebounded with a 74 in the second and another 74 in the final round on Monday. She carded three birdies and five bogies in the third round and finished the tournament at 11-over and tied for 35th.
Sophomore Natalie Sheary, a preseason third team All-American by Golfweek, carded her second 76 of the tournament on Monday to finish tied for 39th at 14-over par. Sheary made one birdie and five bogies in her round.
Senior Jean Chua and junior Dolores White rounded out the Demon Deacon scorers with rounds of 75 and 81, respectively. Chua's round of 75, which included a pair of birdies, was her lowest round of the tournament.
Arizona State started the final round seven shots out of the lead but fired a 2-under 286 to win the tournament by eight shots. The 286 was thanks in large part to a 3-under 69 by Anna Nordquist.
Virginia's Jennie Arseneault led after the first two rounds, but a 79 in the final round opened the door for Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall, who shot a 3-under 69, to win the tournament by two shots over Nordquist.
The Deacons will have a little over two weeks off before getting back to action at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 26-28 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
