Sensing Wins Weight Throw At Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Thomas Sensing won the weight throw and finished second in the shot with personal-bests in both events to lead the Wake Forest track & field team at the Carolina Classic Saturday.
Sensing took the top spot in the weight throw with a toss of 53-08.50 which eclipsed his previous personal-best of 50-00.00 which he set at the Virginia Tech Invite on Jan. 9. He then posted a mark of 52-11.00 in the shot put, which bested his previous best by a full foot, on his way to a second place finish.
In the women's mile run, freshman Laura Rapp took fourth in a time of 5:09.60 while fellow freshman Cate Bereanto finished eighth with a time of 5:22.56. The pair finished in the top-8 of a field that consisted of 44 racers.
Junior Caroline Vaughn ran a solid 8.84 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles to finish seventh after qualifying in the prelims with a time of 8.88. Classmate Alex Gove also moved into the finals after a prelim time of 9.10 but she would bow out with a false start in the finals.
On Friday night, freshman Samantha Howell and volunteer assistant coach Lela V. Nelson competed in the pentathlon at the Liberty On Track Combined Events. Howell wound up finishing 10th out of 22 competitors with a total of 2,750 while Nelson won the event with a facility record 4,065 points.
Howell's best finish came in the high jump where she finished fifth overall with a mark of 5-01.25, earning 689 points. In the same event, Nelson set a second facility record with a leap of 20-03.50.
The track & field team will return to the track next weekend at the Niswonger Invite hosted by East Tennessee State on Friday and Saturday. A number of combined event members will also compete at the Kansas State Combined Events next weekend.
