WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will compete at the ITA Indoors Qualifiers this weekend, hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. The Demon Deacons will open play with Vanderbilt on Saturday and play either Fresno State or Denver on Sunday. If Wake Forest wins both matches they will advance to the ITA Team Indoors Championships in Madison, Wisc.
The Demon Deacons enter weekend play with a 4-0 mark for 2009. Sasha Kulikova leads the Deacs at No. 1 singles with a 4-0 record and was recently ranked 59th in the ITA's national poll. Kulikova and Sierra Poske have been at the top of the doubles lineup so far this season and are also a perfect 4-0 at No. 1.
No. 12 Vanderbilt will open 2009 dual match play with Saturday's contest. The Commodores currently have four players ranked in the ITA top 100, including freshman Jackie Wu who leads the team at No. 21.
Two Deacons faced off with Vanderbilt competitors earlier this season at the ITA Southeast Regionals, held at Wake's own Indoor Tennis Center. Sasha Kulikova ended play at the event with a three-set loss to No. 84 Keilly Ulery in the Round of 16 and WF senior Christian Tara also fell in three sets to No. 55 Catherine Newman in the Round of 32.
No. 28 Denver is 1-1, with a win over Texas San Antonio and 3-4 loss to No. 31 Texas A&M. Senior Mallory Voelker leads the Pioneers with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles and currently holds a 2-0 record at No. 1 doubles with junior Julia Bauregger.
No. 15 Fresno State will play its first dual match of the season vs. Denver on Saturday after the team's originally scheduled opening contest was cancelled due to weather.
