CHAPEL HILL, NC - Junior Natalie Sheary shot a 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th and lead the Wake Forest women's golf team to a ninth place finish at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill.
Sheary was 3-over par through her first nine holes and would play the final nine at 1-under to post a 74. She opened with rounds of 71 and 73 and finished the 54-hole tournament tied for 11th at 2-over par.
The team came into the final round in a tie for fifth at 8-over but didn't have the round it was looking for, finishing ninth after a 13-over 301. Michigan State came into the round with an 11-shot lead and despite shooting a 4-over 292, the Spartans held on for the team title.
"We just didn't get anything going today," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "I thought we were ready to go but we just didn't get any putts to fall which was a little frustrating."
Sophomore Cheyenne Woods had started the tournament with back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 but would finish with a final round 77 to tie 21st at 5-over par.
Michelle Shin tied Sheary's round of 74 on Sunday and after opening the tournament with rounds of 75 and 73, the freshman finished in a tie for 31st a t 6-over. Senior Dolores White had also started the tournament with rounds of 75-73 and would card a total of 16 pars on Sunday but made double-bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18 to finish with a 76. She finished tied for 42nd.
"Michelle and Dolores both played very solid today," said Dailey. "Michelle is such a grinder and she was getting up and down from everywhere while Dolores was hitting it close all day and just couldn't get a putt to fall. She made only two bad swings today and they both happened to cost her."
Junior Allie Bodemann had a bit of a tough week, carding rounds of 77-78-79 and would finish tied for 77th.
Despite her team finishing in tenth place, Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville won the individual race by six-shots after firing a second-straight 68. She finished the tournament at 10-under par as Marina Alex of Vanderbilt and Laura Kueny of Michigan State tied for second at 4-under.
Wake will return to action next weekend at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate hosted by the University of Tennessee at the Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
"We need to take advantage of the practice time we have this week," Dailey continued. "We are in the middle of a stretch of three tournaments in the three weeks so we need to use out practice time wisely and get things straightened out."
The Deacs will finish the fall portion of the schedule in two weeks at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, NC. The Landfall will also serve as the NCAA Fall Preview as the Landfall Country Club will host of the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf Championships next May.
