KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - It was a tough opening round of the Mercedes Benz Championship for the Wake Forest women's golf team as it carded a 24-over 312 and currently stand 16th in the 18-team field.
"We just didn't play very well today," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "Our practice round was rained out yesterday so we didn't have a chance to get out and hit any balls and we just didn't come out sharp at all today. Hopefully we'll get our focus back tonight and come out and finish off the weekend with two good rounds."
The Deacons had just seven birdies as a team on Friday and struggled to get anything going on the tough 6,317-yard, par-72 layout of Fox Den Country Club. Wake made five birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 7-over but found just two birdies on the back side. Host Tennessee felt right at home as it fired a 5-under 283 and have opened-up a 13-shot lead over Kent State and Louisville.
Sophomore Cheyenne Woods played a pretty solid round on Friday for the Deacs, despite finishing with a 76. She was tied for seventh at even-par through 12 holes but played the final five holes in 4-over par. She will start the second round in a tie for 31st.
Junior Natalie Sheary also carded an opening round 76 on Friday. She bogeyed the first two holes out of the gate and would make the turn at 3-over 39. After a bogey at No. 11, she birdied the par-4 12th to get back to 3-over and would play the final six holes at just 1-over.
Senior Dolores White made a birdie at No. 2 to get off to a good start but would finish the round with six bogeys and a double-bogey to card a 79.
Freshman Michelle Shin and junior Allie Bodemann each posted rounds of 81 on Friday. Shin made just one birdie on the day and would card nines of 41 and 40. Bodemann started off even-par through five after a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys and would make the turn in 2-over, but she then come home in 43 to post an opening round 81.
Tennessee's Diana Cantu shot the only bogey-free round of the day, firing a 3-under 69 and leads by one over teammate Ginny Brown. Fellow Volunteer Nathalie Mannson is just a shot further back at 1-under while Ohio State's Susana Benavides, who is playing as an individual this week, also carded a 1-under 71 on Friday and is tied with Mannson for third.
The weather forecast for Saturday's second round looks very similar to Friday as the temperatures are not expected to get above 50 with a slight chance of rain. The Deacons will start the second round at 9:00 am and live scoring will be available through www.golfstat.com.
