WILMINGTON, NC - For the third time this season, Wake Forest sophomore Cheyenne Woods carded a 2-under 70 to lead the Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Landfall Tradition.
As a team, the Deacons started the day on the back nine, which turned out to be the tougher of the two nine at Landfall Country Club's Dye Course. Wake was 9-over par at the turn and would finish the day 16-over to currently stand 13th in the 18-team field.
"We did a lot of good things today but we just weren't quite there," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "We didn't finish off the round the way we wanted to at all but I think we can still take some things from today. The course was setup hard. It's a true championship setup so it definitely wasn't easy."
Woods birdied her first hole of the day and stood at 1-under par at the turn. She then made a birdie at the par-5 fourth to climb to 2-under and would par the final five holes to post her career-low round for the third time this season. She heads into the second round in a tie for third, just two shots off the lead.
"Cheyenne has really been playing well the last few weeks," Dailey continued. "She is putting extremely well right now. That's the biggest improvement in her game from last year. She is hitting the ball well too, but she is really scoring with the putter."
Senior Dolores White has been playing pretty solid this fall for the Deacs and Friday was not exception as she grinded her way to a 4-over 76. She made two birdies in the first six holes and stood at 1-under par, but she then bogeyed the next four holes to fall to 3-over on the day through 10. However, the Lakeland, Fla., native finished off the round strong with seven pars and one bogey to post a 76.
Junior Natalie Sheary opened the tournament with her highest round of the year, a 5-over 77. She made three bogeys on the opening nine to make the turn at 3-over and made a nice birdie at the par-3 second to get to 2-over. But she would play the final four holes at three over to card a 77 and will start the second round tied for 50th.
Freshman Michelle Shin got off to a rocky start, making three bogeys and a double in the first five holes but she regrouped and made four-straight pars to finish the opening nine at 5-over. She then doubled the par-4 third to fall to 7-over and would finish the day with an 81.
Fellow freshman Stephanie Kim, who is playing in just her second tournament, opened with a round of 10-over 82.
Behind four players in the top-15, Southern Cal leads after an opening round even-par 288. The Trojans have a five-shot lead over fellow Pac Ten opponents UCLA and Arizona State, who both shot a 5-over 293.
Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda and Alabama Camilla Lennarth each shot 4-under 68 on Friday and led the individual race by two shots over Woods and Auburn's Cydney Clanton.
"There are a lot of teams tightly packed so anything can happen over the next couple of rounds," said Dailey. "We need to go out there and shoot good number tomorrow and see if we can move up."
The Deacons will start the second round at 9:15 am Saturday morning off the back nine. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available through www.golfstat.com.
