Volleyball Falls To Georgia Tech In Three

ATLANTA, Ga. - Sophomore Carlin Salmon tied a career-high with seven total blocks but Georgia Tech held the Wake Forest volleyball team to its lowest hitting percentage of the season and would go on to sweep the Demon Deacons in three sets Friday night in O'Keefe Gym.
The win (25-14, 25-18, 25-13) moves Tech 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the ACC while Wake falls to 7-14 and is now an even 5-5 in the conference. With the win, the Yellow Jackets are also now a perfect 11-0 at home this season.
Chrissy DeMichelis led all attackers with 10 kills while middle blocker Asia Stawicka added seven kills and five blocks for Tech. Setter Mary Ashley Tippins also had five blocks on the night while dishing out 29 assists.
Freshman Andrea Beck and junior Kristen White led the Deacons with seven kills apiece. Salmon tied her career-high with seven total blocks on the night while also notching the team's only service ace.
Defensively, junior libero Megan Thornberry led the Deacs with 11 digs while White chipped in with six. Setter Kelsey Jones had three block assists to go along with her 20 assists.
The Deacons hit a season-low .011 on the evening with just 24 kills and 23 errors while Georgia Tech hit a solid .293 with 45 kills. The Jackets also out-blocked the Deacons 12-9 and had 35 digs compared to 29 for Wake.
The Yellow Jackets raced out to an 11-3 lead in the first set and eventually took as much as a ten-point lead at 16-6. Tech would then cruise the rest of the way for a 25-14 victory. The Deacs had just six kills in the first set with nine errors.
The momentum stayed with the hosts at the onset of the second set as Tech took an early 7-3 lead forcing a Wake Forest timeout. Following the stoppage, Beck smashed a pair of kills and Lauren McIntyre added one of her own to even the score at 7-7. The Deacs continued the run with a service ace from sophomore Cambrey Oehler and two blocks from Beck and McIntyre to eventually open-up a 10-7 advantage.
Georgia Tech would then respond with an 8-2 run of its own which forced the Deacs to burn their second timeout, trailing 15-12. Monique Mead had three kills during the spurt. The Yellow Jacket run continued out of the break, taking a commanding seven-point lead at 21-14. The teams then traded sideouts the rest of the way to give GT the second set 25-18.
Beck had four kills and two blocks in the set for the Deacs while Mead had six kills to lead the Yellow Jackets.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the third, Georgia Tech got a kill from DeMichelis to spark a 9-2 run that gave Tech a 14-8 lead that it would not relinquish. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 19-9 and would go on to win the set and the match by a final score of 25-13.
White had three kills and Salmon added three blocks in the final set for Wake.
The Demon Deacons will look to rebound on Saturday evening as they head to Clemson for a 7 pm match.
