WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a scoreless, physical battle through the first half, the third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers scored two goals in the final 20 minutes to post a 2-0 victory over the sixth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team.
Virginia improves to 15-2 and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the win and Wake Forest stalls at 10-5, 1-3.
The first half was intense, three athletes were given green card warnings from officials during the back-and-forth period. Virginia's only obvious advantage in the first half was in penalty corners, where the Cavaliers picked up six opportunities and the Deacons had none. Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ruhf logged three saves during the first half to help keep the Deacons even with Virginia despite the lopsided corner opportunities.
UVA's leading scorer, Paige Selenski, scored her 21st goal of the season in the second half on Virginia's lone corner attempt of the period to put Virginia in front 1-0.
Michelle Vitesse snuck in a goal when she broke free from the pack ten minutes later to seal the final score at 2-0.
Wake Forest will finish out the regular season on Saturday, October 31, when it hosts Boston College at 1 p.m.
