2009 ACC Championships - Men's Results
CARY, N.C. - The women's team placed eighth and the men's team finished ninth at the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the WakeMed Soccer and Cross Country Complex on Saturday. Sophomore Dina Nosenko was first for the Demon Deacons and 22nd overall in the 6-kilometer event with a time of 21:10.6. In the men's 8K, freshman Garret Drogosch crossed the line first for Wake Forest for the fourth consecutive time this season with a 24:57.0 and a 41st-overall finish.
Seconds behind Dina Nosenko, sophomore Anna Nosenko was 24th overall with a time of 21:15.9. In 48th place, junior Marley Burns finished the course in 21:58.8.
Redshirt freshman Casey Fowler returned from a foot injury to score fourth for the Deacons with a place of 59th and time of 22:22.9. In fifth, junior Caitlin Crawford was 73rd with a time of 22:43.0.
Freshman Allison Homer made her Wake Forest debut finishing sixth on the squad and 75th overall with a time of 22:52.2. With a time of 23:16.5, redshirt junior Whitney Curry was seventh on the team in 81st.
"The women had a rough go. The course was challenging and it got the best of us in some respects," head coach Annie Bennett said after the race.
The women's team finished eighth, five spots down from last year, with 204 points. No. 6 Florida State won with 37 points, followed by 16th-ranked Duke with 71. Florida State senior Susan Kuijken won her third straight ACC Championships individual title with a time of 19:39.3 in the 6K.
In the men's 8K, Bennett was encouraged by what she saw.
"The men are moving in the right direction, and the team feels they still have more to do," Bennett said after the team finished up two places from last year.
After Drogosch, redshirt junior Keaton Morgan was second for the Deacons with a strong race. Morgan finished the course with a time of 25:29.3. This was his highest finish on the team this season, after placing fourth and sixth twice this season.
Redshirt senior Jeremy Fisico was third on the team and 66th overall with a 25:31.2. With a time of 25:46.7, freshman Sam Foster was next for the Deacs in 76th place.
Senior Marcus Dillon returned for the first time this season coming off a stress fracture and scored for the Deacons in 79th place with a 25:52.6.
The men's team was ninth with 281 points. No. 30 NC State upset No. 12 Virginia, No. 21 Florida State and No. 26 Duke by capturing the team title with 56 points. Virginia, Florida State and Duke were within three points of each other to finish second, third and fourth, respectively. Junior Emil Heineking of Virginia was first overall with a time of 23:15.5.
