CHAPEL HILL, NC - Junior All-American Natalie Sheary carded an opening round 1-under 71 to pace the 12th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team on the first day of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Club.
Sheary opened her round with a birdie at the very first hole and would make the turn at even-par after a bogey at No. 5. She then fell to 1-over par following a bogey at No. 11 but played the final seven holes at 2-under par to post a 71. She will start the second round tied for fifth.
"Natalie played great today and I am really proud of the way she stayed focused," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "She missed a number of short putts but she didn't let that get to her and she kept knocking it close. She really hung in there well."
As a team, the Deacs made the turn in fourth place at 2-over par and would slip to fifth after finishing the day at 5-over 293. Michigan State went out fast and was 6-under through 15 holes but gave three shots back in the closing stretch to finish at 3-under 285. The Spartans hold a five-shot lead over Alabama.
"I think we were a bit rusty today but that was to be expected with not playing in almost a month," Dailey said. "Most of the other teams have been in competitive mode for a couple of weeks now and we're really just getting back into it. We missed a lot of short putts but the team hung in there and didn't get frustrated and I'm really proud of them for that."
Sophomore Cheyenne Woods also got off to a nice start, making birdies at six and seven to make the turn at 2-under. She then made eight pars and a double-bogey on the back nine to card an even-par 72.
Senior Dolores White and freshman Michelle Shin each carded matching rounds of 3-over 75 on Friday. Both players made three bogeys and one birdie on the front to go out in 38 and then carded two bogeys and one birdie on the back to come home in 37. The duo will start Saturday tied for 37th.
Allie Bodemann had a bit of an up-and-down day as she finished with a 77. The Palm City, Fla., native opened the day with a birdie at No. 2 but bogeyed both three and four. She would make the turn at 2-over and then fell to 3-over after a bogey at No. 10 but got that shot right back with a birdie at No. 13. However, Bodemann would play her final four holes at 3-over par to card a 77.
Michigan State's Laura Kueny made a bogey at No. 3 but then played her last 15 holes at 4-under par to lead the individual race by one shot over four other players.
"We were really close to posting a low number today," Dailey continued. "I think if we come out a little sharper and can get a few more of the short putts to drop tomorrow, we'll have a really good shot come Sunday."
The second round will begin Saturday morning with the final round following on Sunday. Golfstat.com will provide live scoring of each of the last two rounds.
