WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest is set to welcome in Triad-rival High Point for the teams' first meeting in nine seasons. The Demon Deacons and Panthers will tipoff at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The game will be available on the Wake Forest ISP Sports Radio Network.
The Deacons are coming off a pair of wins in the season's opening weekend. Wake began the year with a 76-56 defeat of Oral Roberts on Friday at home before traveling to the Greensboro Coliseum to take down East Carolina, 89-58, on Sunday afternoon in a true road game for the Deacs.
Wake Forest was led by sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu, who was named ACC Player of the Week for his efforts over the weekend. Aminu had a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds against Oral Roberts and then finished with 23 points and nine rebounds at East Carolina.
Chas McFarland (10p), Ari Stewart (11p) and L.D. Williams (10p) were all in double figures scoring against ORU, while Ishmael Smith had 14 points and Tony Woods scored 12 against East Carolina.
High Point comes in at 1-0 following its 104-72 rout of UNC Pembroke last Saturday. The Panthers were led by Nick Barbour, who went 10-for-11 from three-point range and finished with 38 points vs. UNCP.
Wake holds an 10-1 lead in the all-time series with HPU, which dates back to the 1925-26 season. The teams have not met since the 1999-2000 campaign when the Deacons downed the Panthers 79-35 in Winston-Salem. That stands as the teams' only meeting in the past 63 seasons.
Deacons vs. Non-Conference, In-State Foes
Wake Forest has not lost at home to a non-conference in-state opponent since the 1985-86 season when Charlotte posted a 62-61 victory at Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem. The Deacons have won 47 straight home games against non-conference in-state opponents, which includes a perfect 40-0 record at the Joel Coliseum.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will take the upcoming weekend off before hosting city-rival Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Deacons will then host William & Mary on Saturday, Nov. 28, in a post-Thanksgiving matchup with the Tribe.
