WASHINGTON, D.C. - Wake Forest out-rebounded the Georgetown Hoyas and had an edge in shooting percentages, but the Demon Deacons proved to beat themselves with turnovers and fell 73-56 in Washington, D.C.
Wake Forest junior Brittany Waters led both teams in scoring with 18 points and Sandra Garcia led on the boards, pulling 15 rebounds. Garcia also contributed 16 points to the Demon Deacon total.
Monica McNutt led Georgetown with 15 points and Jaleesa Butler put up the team-high nine rebounds.
Wake Forest shot 41 percent from the field while the Hoyas finished at 38 percent. Both teams were mediocre from the free throw line, with Wake putting up 64 percent and Georgetown netting 63 percent.
The Demon Deacons felt the absence of sophomore forward Secily Ray, who did not travel with the team so she could be with her family following the passing of her mother earlier in the week. Courteney Morris, who has primarily been playing in the 2-guard slot this season, started at the 3 in place of Ray. Morris played 26 minutes and logged three steals, but couldn't generate much production offensively, adding just one point.
Freshman Mykala Walker stepped came in to help Wake Forest out down low, logging the first minutes of her collegiate career. Through 11 minutes she added two points and one rebound.
Travels, double dribbles and other self-inflicted turnovers plagued the Deacons throughout the first half. Wake Forest committed 20 turnovers in the first half, matching the high for the season, while Georgetown only logged nine steals. Wake Forest cleaned up technique in the second half, recording just 12 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.
Georgetown's lack-luster shooting helped keep the Hoyas from building an overwhelming lead in the first half, going 12-for-38 from the field and 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.
At the 2:10 mark a layup from Jaleesa Butler put Georgetown in front 34-15. The Deacons countered with back-to-back baskets from Asia Williams and Sandra Garcia to prevent Georgetown from gaining a 20-point lead during the half.
Williams drew a foul in the final two seconds before halftime and added a free throw to set the score at 37-23 going into intermission.
Wake Forest cut the Georgetown lead to single digits in the opening minutes of the second half with a 3-point basket from Camille Collier to set the score at 41-32. At 14:02 Waters added a layup to shrink the Georgetown advantage to seven points, the closest Wake Forest would come to catching the Hoyas.
A couple of Deacon turnovers with just under nine minutes to play allowed the Hoyas to net three back-to-back baskets to gain an 18-point lead at 6:01 (62-44). Wake Forest couldn't slow Georgetown in the final minutes and finished with a 73-56 score following a layup from Patrice Johnson with 56 seconds to play.
The Demon Deacons will now have just over a week off competition as they finish up final exams. Wake Forest will play its next game on Monday, December 14 at 11:30 a.m. again North Florida.
