BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Brent LaRue turned in four solid performances and currently sits fourth in the heptathlon after the first day of the ACC Indoor Championships at Rector Field House in Blacksburg.
In the women's pentathlon, junior Caroline Vaughn and Samantha Howell both scored personal-bests in one of the toughest pentathlons in ACC history. Vaughn took 11th with a total of 3,499 points while Howell finished 18th with 3,049 points.
"If you look at the scores, this was the best pentathlon in ACC history," said Wake Forest assistant coach Scott Hall. "I think the score that finished fourth would have won the event the last couple of years. That kind of puts it into perspective. Caroline (Vaughn) and Sam (Howell) both did very well today.
Vaughn started the day off well, running a school-record 8.43 in the 60-meter hurdles. It was the fourth time she broke the school-record this winter. She also jumped a season-best 5-02.50 in the high jump and was fifth after two events.
She turned in a mark of 21-09.50 in the shot put and leapt a solid 17-04.75 in the long jump.
Vaughn will also compete in the 60-meter hurdle race and the 4x400-meter relay this weekend.
On the first day of the men's heptathlon, LaRue ran a season-best 7.06 and jumped a personal-best of 6-05.50 in the high jump. He also turned in a mark of 41-10 in the shot put and 21-07.50 in the long jump
Fellow junior Tyler Dodds ran a personal-best 6.99 in the 60-meter run to win the event. He joins Michael Bingham (6.96) as the only two Deacons to break seven seconds in the 60-meter dash this season.
Dodds also jumped 21-05.50 in the long jump and 6-03.25 in the high jump. He finished the day with a mark of 35-00.50 in the shot put and will start the second day in seventh with 2,843 points.
Freshman Alex Hill had a season-long jump of 22-07 in the long jump to take third and ran a 7.22 in the 60-meter dash. He starts the final day in 10th.
"Overall, I think it was a very good day for us," Hall said. "The combined events in ACC continues to get better and better each year and I think our athletes competed very well today. Everyone is in good spirits and I think we will have a good rest of the weekend."
The heptathlon will conclude on Friday while the rest of the competition will get underway. ACC Select will broadcast all of the action on Friday and Saturday over the internet and can be accessed through www.accselect.com.
