RALIEGH, N.C. - The men's 4x400-meter relay team closed out a wet weekend for the Wake Forest track & field team by qualifying for the NCAA regionals at the Raleigh Relays Saturday afternoon.
The team of Brent LaRue, Allan Lunkenheimer, Jon Reid and Michael Bingham crossed the line with a time of 3:05.98, which was just over four seconds under the regional qualifying time of 3:10.00. However, the team from St. Augustines clipped the Deacs at the line with a time of 3:05.95.
The women's 4x200-meter relay team of Melissa Council, Alex Gove, Lily Kessinger and Katelyn Wohlford also turned in a great performance, setting the school-record with a time of 1:39.51 to finish seventh.
That broke the previous school-record by nearly four seconds (1:43.35) which the team of Sherri Braxton, Tina Lane, Kathy Miller and Molly Pancake set back in 1991.
Junior Nicole Castronuova won her section of the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.07 but Barbara Pierre of St. Augustines won her section with a time of 24.05, nipping Castronuova by two-hundredths of a second.
Dina Nosenko finished third in the women's 1,500-meter run with a team-best time of 4:28.17. She was just under a half a second off the NCAA Regional qualifying time.
The Demon Deacon field athletes also competed this weekend at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. Freshman Erin Brooks finished runner-up in her second event of the weekend as she turned in a mark of 38-2 in the triple jump on Saturday.
Sophomore Suzie Clinchy ran a nice 1,500-meter race as well on Saturday, finishing tenth with a time of 5:01.17.
Junior Thomas Sensing led four Demon Deacons in the men's javelin with a third-place finish. He posted a mark of 188-11 and was followed by Stephen Castilligo (170-4) in sixth, Trey Blanton (149-3) in ninth and Jason Raggi (135-6) in 16th.
Aaron Payne jumped a season-best 6-2.75 to finish fourth in the men's high jump while Scott McCullough finished sixth with a height of 6-0.75.
Junior Caroline Vaughn competed in the heptathlon this weekend at Winthrop and finished third overall with a total of 3,941 points. She won four of the seven events, including running a 25.37 in the 200-meter run but fouled in the javelin, which hampered her overall score.
In the men's decathlon, Charles Klug was the only Demon Deacon to compete in all ten events, finishing ninth overall with 4,381 points. Freshman Alex Hill also had a pair of nice performances in the decathlon, winning both the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 50.32 and the long jump with a mark of 21-5.50.
Wake will return to action next weekend at the Auburn Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
