ATHENS, Ga. - After the first two rounds of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic were washed out by rain, the tournament was shortened to an 18-hole shootout on Sunday and unfortunately, the Wake Forest women's golf team didn't have one of their best days, finishing tied for 12th.
The Demon Deacons, who were lead by sophomore Natalie Sheary's 2-over 74, carded a round of 309 (+21) and tied with ACC-foe Florida State.
Auburn won the team title, holding off North Carolina over the final holes, to post a round of 299. Alabama's Kathleen Ekey made four birdies and just one bogey to shot a 3-under 69 to take home medalist honors.
Sheary started the day strong, making three birdies in her first eight holes but would finish 5-over through the last 10 holes to post a 2-over 74 and finish tied for fifth.
Senior Nannette Hill and freshman Cheyenne Woods each posted rounds of 6-over 78 while senior Jean Chua came in with a 79 and junior Dolores White cared an 80.
The long wet weekend took its toll on everyone but there is no rest for the weary as Wake Forest will join UNC Greensboro in hosting the Bryan National Collegiate next weekend. There were a total of seven teams playing this weekend in Georgia that will also make the quick turnaround next week. Action is scheduled to get underway at 8:20 a.m. Friday morning.
