WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team takes the field for the first time since December on Saturday when it faces Major League Soccer's New England Revolution at Macpherson Stadium at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex in Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
The game marks the first of a five-game spring schedule for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest will also play the Carolina RailHawks, the University of Denver, the University of Akron and the Maryland Terrapins during the spring.
The Deacs will have to replace eight seniors from the 2008 squad, including six players that were drafted in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. Lyle Adams, Evan Brown, Sam Cronin, Jamie Franks, Michael Lahoud and Marcus Tracy all started for Wake Forest during the 2008 season and were drafted by the MLS in January.
Wake Forest still returns quite a bit of firepower from the 2008 team. Corben Bone, who led the country in assists during the 2008 season, and Austin da Luz return to anchor the midfield, while Cody Arnoux and Zack Schilawski are a formidable 1-2 combination on the Wake Forest front line. ACC Defensive Player of the Year Ike Opara and Danny Wenzel are two of the best central defenders in college soccer.
The New England Revolution is perennially one of the top teams in Major League Soccer. The Revolution was 12-11-7 in 2008 and advanced to the MLS Playoffs. New England features a pair of former Wake Forest players as Pat Phelan and Wells Thompson are current members of the Revolution.
Tickets for the game are $15 and can be purchased at carolinadynamo.com.
