First and Second Round Results

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - - Junior Travis Wadkins carded a round of 2-under 70 in the second round on Sunday to take the individual lead after two rounds of the General Jim Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

Behind Wadkins' strong second round and steady play all day, the Demon Deacons sit in third place after rounds of 300 and 291. Wake trails East Tennessee State by four shots and Pepperdine by just one.

After a round of 1-over 73 in the first round, Wadkins started his second round with back-to-back bogies but made four birdies and no bogies over his final 16 holes to post a splendid round of 70.

"Travis played really steady today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "He didn't do anything flashy but he hit fairways and greens and avoided the spots where you have the potential to make big number."

Wadkins was perhaps feeding off his final round last year at the Hackler where he posted a 1-under par 71 to lead the Demon Deacons to a come-from-behind victory.

Junior Brendan Gielow also played a strong second round, posting a 1-under 71 and is currently tied for 13th at 4-over.

After a tough opening round, junior Preston Yates responded with two birdies and two bogies in his second round for an even-par 72. He will start the final round tied for 55th.

Senior Dustin Groves carded rounds of 74-78=152 and is tied for 36th at 8-over while freshman Daniel Meggs posted scores of 76-78=154 and will start the round on Monday tied for 46th at 10-over.

"The guys played really solid today and they seem to be in a good frame of mind for tomorrow," Haas continued. "Obviously, Dustin and Daniel would have liked to play better in the second round but I am proud of the guys the way they responded after the last tournament. Preston showed a lot of heart in the afternoon and overall I think the guys have a good feeling about tomorrow."

Freshman Lee Bedford played as an individual today for the Deacs and posted rounds of 76 and 79 to sit at T50th at 11-over.

The final round will begin with tee times at 8 a.m. Monday morning. The Deacons will be playing in the final group which is scheduled to tee-off at 9:30. Live scoring of the final round can be found at www.golfstat.com.
