WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Boston College starter JB MacDonald carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning and Mickey Wiswall went 2-for-5 with five RBIs as the Eagles won game one of Saturday's doubleheader 23-2 over Wake Forest.
Wake Forest drops to 18-14 and 5-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Boston College improves to 21-11 and 8-6 in league play.
MacDonald stifled the Wake Forest offense for much of the game. MacDonald had a no-hitter entering the ninth inning, but Austin Stadler, who started the game for Wake Forest, broke it up with a double down the right-field line. Before the ninth, MacDonald allowed just three base runners, two in the first inning and one in the fourth. He improved his record to 4-3, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out four.
Stadler suffered the loss for the Demon Deacons, giving up six runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in three innings pitched.
Stadler, Steven Brooks and Mike Murray each had a hit for Wake Forest. Brooks and Murray also recorded one RBI.
Wiswall led the BC offense with five RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Mike Belfiore had a team-high four hits and drove in three runs, while Barry Butera went 3-for-7 with four RBIs.
Boston College scored first with three runs in the top of the first. Matt Hamlet started the rally with a single through the right side. Tony Sanchez followed with a walk. Wiswall hit the first pitch he saw over the right-center field fence to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles added on to their lead with three runs in the top of the third. Sanchez reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to start the inning, but was retired at second when Wiswall grounded into a fielder's choice. Belfiore singled to put runners at first and second with one out. After Butera struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, Garret Smith doubled down the right-field line to score Wiswall and Belfiore. Smith moved to third on the play when Ocheltree misplayed the ball down the right-field line. Mike Sudol was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Brad Zapenas singled up the middle to score Smith for BC's sixth run of the game.
Boston College broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth. Butera cleared the bases with a three-run home run with one out in the inning to give the Eagles a 9-0 lead. Zapenas drove in two runs with a RBI single and Wiswall followed with a two-RBI single later in the inning. Belfiore closed the scoring with an RBI single to put BC in front 14-0.
The Eagles added a run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and six runs in the ninth.
Wake Forest scored its only two runs of the game in the ninth. Stadler led off the inning with a double down the right-field line. Brooks drove in Stadler with a single to center-field. After Kroker and Hood were retired, Murray singled to right to score Brooks for the Deacs' second run. Weldon Woodall struck out swinging to end the game.
Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m. Senior southpaw Garrett Bullock (1-0, 6.65) will take the mound for Wake Forest, while Boston College will counter with sophomore righty John Lenoard (1-1, 7.42).
