WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team is in search of its fourth ACC title this weekend at the 2009 Women's Golf ACC Championships at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
The Demon Deacons will look to dethrone Duke, as the Blue Devils have won each of the last 13 ACC crowns. Wake Forest is the last team to win the title as it claimed back-to-back victories in 1994 and 1995.
Despite the recent dominance by Duke, Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey is optimistic about this year's championship.
"There are a number of very good teams this year and I think it will be a very close and competitive championship," Dailey said. "I don't think one team will run away with it and that means every shot is going to be critical. So we are going to have to come out focused and ready to go which I think we will be. We had a good week or practice and the students are really looking forward to playing this weekend."
The Wake Forest lineup this weekend will include seniors Nannette Hill and Jean Chua, sophomores Allie Bodemann and Natalie Sheary along with freshman Cheyenne Woods.
This will be the fourth consecutive trip to the ACC Championship for both Hill and Chua and all that's left for the pair to do is claim a team title. The seniors have guided Wake to a fourth place finish in 2008, a third place finish in 2006 and a second place finish in 2007.
Hill's best finish came last season when she carded rounds of 76-75-74=225 (+9) to finish tied for 17th. Chua led the team as a freshman in 2006 with an eighth place finish after rounds of 75-78-73=226 (+10).
Hill leads the team this year with a 74.1 stroke average through 22 rounds and has posted a team-best four top-5 finishes. Chua is third on the team with a 74.9 stroke average through her 19 tournament rounds and has a pair of top-5 finishes.
Sheary and Bodemann each carded rounds of 2-under 70 at last year's ACC Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Dayton Beach, Fla., on their way to top-10 finishes. Sheary led the squad with her fifth place showing and Bodemann was close behind in eighth.
Sheary is just five strokes behind Hill for the lowest-stroke average on the team at 74.4. She finished tied for 32nd in the second tournament of the season but has yet to finish outside of the top-20 since, including a win at the Lady Tar Heel and two more two-5 finishes.
Bodemann got off to a bit of a slow start this spring but has come into form the past few weeks. She fired a career-low 3-under 69 in the final round of the Bryan National Collegiate two weeks ago for her first top-20 finish of the year.
Woods has played in every tournament in this her first season on campus and she is currently fourth on the team with a 76.0 stroke average.
After a spring filled with wet weather, the forecast for this weekend looks favorable with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s and very little chance of rain.
The Demon Deacons will be in the second grouping Friday morning and will start their first round at 9:20 a.m. Wake will be paired with North Carolina and NC State for the first round.
Golfstat will host live scoring of all three rounds while ACC Select will have coverage of Saturday and Sunday's round from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., free of charge.
