WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team will begin the quest for the program's first national championship Tuesday afternoon at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Owings Mills, Md.
Caves Valley Golf Club (6,443 yards, par-72) will be the site of the championships this week. The Demon Deacons are some-what familiar with the course, having played it at the NCAA Fall Preview in September.
Wake finished ninth at the Preview, posting rounds of 304-305-299=908 (+44). Freshman Cheyenne Woods led the team finishing tied for 26th. However, the course will play 250 yards longer this week than it did in the fall.
Head coach Dianne Dailey's lineup will feature Woods, along with seniors Nannette Hill and Jean Chua as well as sophomores Allie Bodemann and Natalie Sheary.
For Hill and Chua, this will be their fourth-straight championships. They are just the fifth and sixth Demon Deacons to do so and the first since Laura Philo (Diaz) in 1994-97.
Bodemann and Sheary are playing in their second championship. Last year, Sheary finished tied for 28th after rounds of 74-76-76-73=299 (+11).
As a team, the Deacs tied for 10th last season as the high winds at the New Mexico Championship Course gave the entire field fits. This week, the weather forecast looks more favorable. The temperatures are expected to be in the 70s all week with very little chance of rain. However, frost is expected in the morning on both Tuesday and Wednesday, thus the officials have pushed back the tee-times by one-half hour each day.
Wake Forest will tee-off Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 pm and will start at 8:00 am Wednesday morning. The Deacs are paired with Tennessee and LSU for the first two rounds. Tee-times for the final two rounds will be determined by the first two day's scores.
Arizona State is ranked first by Golfstat, Golfweek and in the Golfworld/NGCA Coaches' Poll. The Sun Devils are considered the favorites to win the tournament after capturing the NCAA West Regional title with a score of 22-under-par - 19 strokes better than second place. The Central Regional winner was UCLA and the East Regional winner was Denver. Other ACC squads in the 24-team field along with Wake Forest are Duke, North Carolina and Virginia.
Golfstat will host live scoring of all three rounds while CSTV will host a live webstream on holes 16, 17 and 18 for the final two rounds.
Results from each day will be posted live at www.WakeForestSports.com.
