CLEMSON, S.C. - Junior Caroline Vaughn won the women's 100-meter hurdle race to lead the Wake Forest track & field team at the Clemson Orange & Purple Classic at the Rock Norman Track Saturday afternoon.
Vaughn outran the field in a time of 13.57 and was followed across the line by fellow Deacons Alex Gove (14.31) in sixth and Samantha Howell (16.35) in 10th.
Gove also finished second in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 57.16.
Junior Jon Reid also ran a strong 200-meter race on the men's side, turning in a personal-best time of 21.44 to finish seventh.
Thomas Sensing had a good day in the throws, finishing second in both the shot put and the discus. He had a season-best toss of 54-04.00 in the shot put and then turned in a mark of 161-05 in the discus.
Trey Blanton also posted a season-best in the discus as well as the pole vault. In the discus, he finished 15th with a mark of 118-00 and he took second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-01.00.
Sarah Brobeck represented the women well in the throwing events, taking second in the shot put, third in the discus and fifth in the javelin. She turned in a mark of 38-09.00 in the shot before posting a season-best in the discus of 128-05.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Melissa Council crossed the line in 24.37 to take sixth while Nicole Castronuova was 12th at 24.72.
On the men's side, senior Phillip Warsaw took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.62 and freshman Justin Bookheimer ran a season-best 55.81 to finish 12th.
Aaron Payne tied his season-best in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-04.75.
On Friday evening, freshman Carmen Green finished sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 129-00 while teammate Cate Hansing turned in a mark of 109-07 to take ninth.
Samantha Howell took seventh in the women's long jump with a leap of 16-03.75.
At the Chick-fil-A UNC Elite Meet Friday night, Kim Vos led a group of Demon Deacons with her 10th place finish in the 800-meter run. Vos crossed the line in a time of 2:13.12 while Hannah McArdle turned in a time of 2:26.45 to finish 24th.
In the men's 800, Thomas Morrison finished 15th with a time of 1:54.08.
The combined event athletes will be in action this Tuesday and Wednesday at Kentner Stadium for the Deacon Combined Events while the rest of the team will return to action at the Georgia Tech Invitational next Friday and Saturday, May 15-16.
