WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The professional baseball season has entered its third month. Below is an update on how former Wake Forest baseball players are faring in the professional ranks.
Dave Bush (1999-2002) is in his fourth year as a starting pitcher with the Milwaukee Brewers. Bush has made 12 appearances on the season, including a team-high tying 11 starts. He has compiled a 3-2 record with a 4.52 ERA in a team-leading 69 2/3 innings pitched. Bush has turned in six quality starts (at least six innings pitched with three or less earned runs) in his last 10 outings. The Brewers are currently tied for first with the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.
Mike MacDougal (1997-99) was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox in April, but was signed by the Washington Nationals on May 3. He joined the Nats on May 29 after giving up a run in 7 1/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse. MacDougal has pitched in three games for the Nationals and has not allowed a run in two innings.
Jamie D'Antona (2001-03) is in his first season with the Tokyo Swallows of Japan's Central League. D'Antona has played in 44 games and is hitting .239 with a team-leading eight homers. D'Antona also ranks second on the team with 23 RBIs. The Swallows are 26-20 on the season and are second in the Central League.
Matt Antonelli (2004-06) opened the season on the disabled list for the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Since returning from the injury, Antonelli has played in 22 games and has posted a .150 batting average with a homer and seven RBIs.
Josh Ellis (2004-07) opened the season with the Reno Aces, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ellis appeared in 14 games with Reno and had a 3-1 record with an 8.05 ERA. He was sent down to Double-A Mobile on May 22 and has appeared in four games since joining the BayBears. Ellis has a 1-1 record and a 2.45 ERA with Mobile, giving up two runs in 7 1/3 innings.
Cory Sullivan (2000-01) is an outfielder for the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Sullivan has played in 48 games with the Bisons and is hitting .253 with two homers and 11 RBIs. Sullivan has played well over his last 10 games, batting .325 with three RBIs.
Allan Dykstra (2006-08) has started his first full professional season with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, a Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Dykstra has played in 49 of the team's 53 games and has a .200 batting average with two home runs and 21 RBIs. The TinCaps have a 32-21 record and are second in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.
Andy Goff (2004-08) is on the reserve list for the Modesto Nuts, a Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Goff last played on April 25. He has played in five games on the season and does not have a hit in three plate appearances.
Eric Niesen (2005-07) is a starting pitcher for the St. Lucie Mets, a Single-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Niesen has pitched well in the first half of the season and was recently named to the Florida State League South Division All-Star Team. Niesen is 3-3 on the season with a 2.53 ERA in 10 games, all starting appearances. He leads the team 57 innings pitched and is second on the team with 49 strikeouts.
