WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Phillip Warsaw and sophomore Marley Burns were named to the ESPN The Magazine Men's and Women's first team Track & Field and Cross Country Academic All-District teams on Friday.
This is the third-straight season that Warsaw has claimed Academic All-District honors. He was a first team honoree this season and last season and took home second team honors as a sophomore in 2007. Last year, Warsaw was also named a third team Academic All-American.
Burns is earning the award for the first time in her career as a student-athlete must be of sophomore standing and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for the award. The teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Warsaw, a mathematical economics major with a 3.89 GPA, had a strong indoor season. It was highlighted by third-place finishes in both the 400m and 600m races and a victory as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team at the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 17. He also was a member of the distance medley relay team that took seventh at the ACC Championships with a time of 10:12.29.
The Elizabethtown, Ky., native then started his outdoor season off with a bang, running a blazing 52.49 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Wake Forest Open to finish second and qualify for the NCAA Regionals. He then finished eighth at the ACC Championships in the 400-meter hurdles after a gutsy performance, as he ran with a pulled muscle in his leg.
Burns, who is a health and exercise science major, has a perfect 4.00 GPA through her first two years. She has shined in competition as well, earning All-Region honors in cross country this past fall after finishing second on the team and 23rd overall at the NCAA Southeast Regionals with a time of 21:39.6. She was also named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Cross Country Team for the second-straight season.
On the track, Burns finished ninth in the 5,000-meter run (17:08.53) at the ACC Indoor Championships and also took 13th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:00.73.
During the outdoor season, the Asheville, N.C., native took 13th in the 10,000-meter run at the ACCs with a season-best time of 38:32.12.
Both student-athletes will now be put on the national ballot, which will be voted on next week and the Academic All-American Teams will be announced on June 18 and June 19.
