WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Dustin Groves was named to the 2009 Ping East All-Region team as announced Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Groves finished in the top-20 in nine out of 12 tournaments this season, including a tied for seventh finish at the Northeast Regional at Galloway National Golf Club last month. Out of those nine top-20 finishes, he had four top-5 finishes and led the team with a 72.9 stroke average, the best single-season of his career.
This is the first time Groves has garnered All-Region honors and this season also marked the first time he received All-ACC honors. The Keswick, Va., native was named first team All-ACC, becoming the 34th different Demon Deacon to be named to the All-ACC Team in 35 years of voting.
Groves also topped the team this year with 15 of his 37 rounds at par or better. His best tournament finish was a tie for second at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate where he fired rounds of 72-72-71 to finish at 1-under par.
His best tournament in relation to par came at the VCU Shootout, where he fired rounds of 68-65-69=202 (-11) to finish tied for 3rd. Groves' second round 65 (-6) was not only a career-best but it also helped the team card a school-record 15-under 269. Wake would eventually go on to win the tournament by 16-shots.
Groves finished his career in the black & gold with a 74.2 stroke average. He notched a total of 15 top-20 finishes and 77.8 percent of his 123 career rounds counted towards the team score.
