WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second half of the professional baseball season is underway. Here's a look at how former Wake Forest baseball players are faring in the pros.
Dave Bush (1999-2002) is a starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers and has posted a 3-4 record with a 5.67 ERA in 15 games, including 14 starts. Bush has been on the disabled list since June 23. He made a rehab start for Double-A Huntsville on July 15, but felt tiredness in his arm after throwing three innings. Bush is scheduled to throw again on Friday to test his arm.
Mike MacDougal (1997-99) has made 22 appearances with the Washington Nationals and has saved six games. MacDougal has a 2.25 ERA with Washington in 20 innings pitched, allowing eight runs, with just five of them earned. Opponents are hitting just .239 against him. For the entire 2009 season, MacDougal has appeared in 27 games with a 4.07 ERA.
Cory Sullivan (2000-01) is an outfielder for the New York Mets. He was recalled to the majors on July 20 and made his first appearance on July 22 against Washington, going 0-for-4. Sullivan hit .290 with 37 runs scored, 16 doubles, two home runs and 24 RBIs with triple-A Buffalo. Sullivan did not commit an error with the Bisons and hit .318 in June and July.
Jamie D'Antona (2001-03) is in his first season with the Tokyo Swallows of Japan's Central League. D'Antona has played in 59 games and has a .256 batting average with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs. He ranks second on the team in both homers and RBIs.
Matt Antonelli (2004-06) has played in 51 games for the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The Peabody, Mass., native is hitting .188 with four home runs and 22 RBIs. Antonelli had a pair of hits, including a double, against Tacoma on July 8 and hit his fourth homer of the year against Tacoma on July 9.
Josh Ellis (2004-07) is a relief pitcher for the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ellis has made 14 relief appearances with Mobile this season and has a 3-1 record with a 1.82 ERA. He has allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on 19 hits in 24 2/3 innings pitched. Ellis has struck out 29 and walked just six.
Eric Niesen (2005-07) is a starting pitcher for the Binghamton Mets, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Niesen is 1-5 with a 7.36 ERA in eight starts with Binghamton. He has thrown 36 2/3 innings and allowed 31 runs on 42 hits.
Allan Dykstra (2006-08) is in his first full professional season with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, the Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Dykstra has played in 85 games with the TinCaps and is hitting .198 with six homers and 38 RBIs. Dykstra currently sports a .381 on-base percentage with 72 walks on the year. Dykstra had a homer and drove in two runs against Peoria on July 13.
Andy Goff (2004-08) is an infielder with the Asheville Tourists, the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Goff is hitting .150 with two RBIs in 14 games with the Tourists. Goff went 2-for-3 with an RBI against Charleston on July 5.
Garrett Bullock (2006-09) is a relief pitcher with the Greeneville Astros, Houston's rookie league team. Bullock has made four relief appearances and has allowed one unearned run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched. He threw a perfect inning of relief on July 17 against Johnson City, striking out two of the men he faced.
Phil Negus (2007-09) has started his professional career with the Bristol White Sox, the rookie league team of the Chicago White Sox. Negus has pitched in seven games, including two starts, and has no record with a 2.20 ERA. In 16 1/3 innings, Negus has allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on 14 hits, while striking out 31 batters. Negus tossed two scoreless innings against Burlington on July 22 and recorded two strikeouts.
Eric Williams (2006-08) is playing with the Big Bend Cowboys in the Continental Professional Baseball League. Williams, who was selected for the Continental Baseball League's All-Star Game, is hitting a league-best .373 with a home run and 15 RBIs. He leads the league with a .533 on-base percentage and has also played well defensively, committing just one error.
