WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Stephanie Kim will be a freshman on the Wake Forest women's golf team this fall but before she arrives on campus, she will first represent Team USA as a member of the PING Junior Solheim Cup.
Kim was one of 12 junior golfers selected for the event that is being played at Aurora Country Club in Aurora, Ill., Aug. 17-19, the days leading up to The Solheim Cup. The Solheim Cup will be played Aug. 17-23 at nearby Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The only girls' team event of its kind at the junior level, the PING Junior Solheim Cup is a PING tournament managed by the AJGA.
The 12 players on the U.S. team were selected based on a combination of the AJGA's Polo Golf Rankings and the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Girls Rankings as of July 20. This year, Nancy Lopez, a 1987 LPGA Hall of Fame inductee and member of the inaugural 1990 Solheim Cup, will serve as captain.
Kim, a second-team Rolex Junior All-American in 2008, is currently ranked No. 17 in the Polo Golf Rankings and No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. She has spent most of her spring and summer playing on the DURAMED Futures Tour, where she has enjoyed full-time status each of the last two years.
This week, Kim is playing as a member of the East Team at the AJGA's Canon Cup in Flagstaff, Ariz. She has had a total of seven AJGA top-10 finishes in her career, including a third-place finish at the 2009 Polo Golf Junior Classic.
The first Junior Solheim Cup was played in 2002 and has been part of Solheim Cup week ever since. This year will mark the fifth playing of the event. The two sides are tied at 2-2 as each team has won on its home soil.
