Complete 2009-10 Schedule
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- - The Wake Forest men's golf team has released its 2009-10 schedule which features return trips to five tournaments from last season. Two of those trips will be to sites of the Deacon's two wins last year at the VCU Shootout and the General Hackler Championship.
The Deacons will start the season on familiar ground at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in Rocky Face, Ga., on Sept. 11-13. The tournament will once again be played at The Farm Golf Club, where the Deacs finished tied for 7th in 2007 and 10th last season.
The following week, Wake will head to Chicago, Ill., for the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at famed Olympia Fields Country Club, the site of the 2003 US Open.
Playing their third tournament in as many weeks, the Deacs will look to defend their title at the VCU Shootout (Sept. 28-29). Behind a career-best finish from Brendan Gielow, Wake fired a three-round total of 27-under par to win the tournament by 16-shots. Gielow finished tied for medalist honors at 12-under par after a career-low 64 in the second round.
The fall portion of the schedule concludes with a trip to the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges on Oct. 16-18. Last year, the Deacs held the lead heading into the final round but slipped to third after a final round 295. Both Gielow and senior Dustin Groves finished in the top-10. Groves was tied for second, which was his best finish of the season.
The Deacons will start the spring portion of the schedule at the famed TPC of Sawgrass Stadium Course for the JU Invitational on Feb. 7-9. Jacksonville University will be the host and this is the first time Wake has played in the event.
Almost a month later, the Deacons will play in their second-straight new tournament at the Seahawk Intercollegiate on March 1-2. The tournament is being hosted by UNC Wilmington at Landfall Country Club, which will also host the Women's NCAA Championship in May.
The Deacs will then look to defend their title at the General Hackler Championship on March 14-15, at the TPC of Myrtle Beach. Last year, Wake placed three golfers in the top-10 on its way to its second-straight victory at the Hackler. Gielow led the way with a tie for third at 3-over par while Travis Wadkins (T6) and Groves (T10) also had good tournaments.
Wake has enjoyed a fair amount of success at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in recent years, winning two out of the last four championships. This year, the tournament is being played on March 28-30, in Awandaw, S.C.
Next-up will be a trip to the newly-built Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus of NC State for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on April 9-10. That will serve as a final tune-up for the ACC Championship which is being played at the Old North State Golf Club in Uwharrie Pointe, N.C. on April 23-25. The Deacons finished fourth in 2009. This will mark the eighth year in a row that Old North State has hosted the ACC Championship.
Last year, the NCAA Regionals expanded from three sites to six. The same format will be in place again this season and all six tournaments will be played on May 20-22.
The season will culminate with the 2010 NCAA Championship at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. Wake has advanced as a team to the NCAA Championships six of the last seven seasons.
