Wake Forest Announces 2009-10 Basketball Schedule

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's 28-game regular season schedule was released by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The 2009-10 schedule is highlighted by 15 home games at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 14 appearances on national television and a number of intriguing non-conference matchups.
The Demon Deacons, who will be led by third-year head coach Dino Gaudio, will face 12 teams that participated in postseason play in 2008-09, including eight that made the NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest will appear on television 21 times, including all 16 ACC games. The Deacons will play in front of a national television audience 14 times, including nine games on the ESPN family of networks, four on Fox Sports Net and once on CBS.
The Deacs will play two regular season road games at the Greensboro Coliseum in preparation for the 2010 ACC Tournament, which will be held at the venue. Wake Forest will face East Carolina in Greensboro on Nov. 15 and then play UNC Greensboro at the Coliseum on Dec. 28.
Wake Forest opens the season by hosting Summit League foe Oral Roberts on Friday, Nov. 13. The Deacons have never faced the Golden Eagles previously.
Wake will play ECU in Greensboro two days later before hosting Triad-rival High Point on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Wake Forest and High Point last met on the hardwood in 2000.
The Deacons will host city-rival Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The two teams have met each of the past two regular seasons.
William & Mary will visit the Joel on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Deacons last faced the Tribe during the 1998-99 campaign.
Wake Forest opens the month of December with a pair of tough road matchups. The Deacs travel to Purdue to face the Boilermakers in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game, which is set to be televised on ESPN, will mark the first meeting between the schools since the 1989-90 season.
The Deacons will then travel to the Pacific Northwest to face Gonzaga on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Kennel in Spokane, Wash. The first-ever matchup between the Deacs and Zags will be on ESPN2.
After the Gonzaga trip, the team will have a full week off for final exams before returning to the court to host in-state rival Elon on Sunday, Dec. 13.
The Deacs will remain in-state when they travel east to play at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, Dec. 16, on ESPNU. The Deacons defeated the Seahawks last season at the Joel Coliseum.
Wake Forest opens ACC play before Christmas this season, hosting NC State on Sunday, Dec. 20, on FSN.
Following a seven-day break for Christmas, Wake will play at UNCG in the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday, Dec. 28. The Triad rivals have not met since 1999-2000.
Fans can ring in the New Year with the Deacons when Wake Forest hosts Richmond on Thursday, Dec. 31, on ESPNU. Wake picked up a road win at Richmond last season.
Wake Forest will host Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 3, in the inaugural game of the Skip Prosser Classic. The Deacons and Musketeers, who have met just once previously in 1999, will face one another each of the next 10 seasons, alternating home and home. This year's matchup will be televised on FSN.
The Deacons return to conference play for the remainder of the regular season when they play at Miami on Saturday, Jan. 9, on ESPNU. The Hurricanes will make a return trip to Winston-Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 2, for an ESPN2-televised game.
In addition to Miami, Wake Forest also plays Georgia Tech (Jan. 28 Away; Feb. 13 Home), North Carolina (Jan. 20 Away; Feb. 27 Home), NC State (Dec. 20 Home; Feb. 20 Away) and Virginia (Jan. 23 Home; Feb. 6 Away) twice.
The Deacons home game against North Carolina on Feb. 27 will be televised nationally by CBS, while the game at the Smith Center on Jan. 20 will be on ESPN.
Wake hosts Maryland (Jan. 12), Boston College (Feb. 9) and Clemson (March 7) and plays at Duke (Jan. 17), Virginia Tech (Feb. 16) and Florida State (March 3) in single-game regular season series.
The Duke and Clemson games are set to broadcast as part of FSN's Sunday Night Hoops package.
The 2010 ACC Tournament is scheduled for March 11-14 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. It will mark the first time since 2006 that the conference tournament has been held in Greensboro.
Wake Forest will play one exhibition game prior to the start of the 2009-10 season. The Deacs will host IUP on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Joel Coliseum.
