ST LOUIS, Mo. - Nannette Hill, Natalie Sheary and Michelle Shin are still alive after the first round of match play at the 2009 US Women's Amateur at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.
Shin entered match play as the No. 10-seed and faced Stephanie Meadow of Northern, Ireland on Wednesday. She held a couple of 1-up leads on the front nine but she bogeyed the par-4 ninth and the pair made the turn all-square.
Shin then won four of the first five holes on the back nine to take a commanding lead and eventually won the match 3 and 2. She will now take on Caroline Masson of Germany in the round of 32 on Thursday morning.
Sheary was the No. 47-seed and was opposite 17-seed Alice Kim on Wednesday. The match was all-square through three but Sheary birdied three of the next four holes to take a 3-up lead through seven.
Sheary remained 3-up through 10 but after Kim birdied the par-3 13th, her lead had shrunk to just one. She then won the 15th hole with a par and then birdied the par-5 16th to win the match 3 and 2. Sheary will now play Erynne Lee on Thursday morning.
Hill lost the first hole of the day to Emilie Burger and found herself in an early hole. But she battled back to square the match at No. 3 and then took a 2-up lead through eight.
Burger then bounced-back and won both nine and ten to again square the match but just like before, Hill won the next two holes to take another 2-up lead through 12.
After trading wins on 14 and 15, the pair halved the next two holes and Hill came out with a 2 and 1 victory. She will now face Auburn's Cydney Clanton in the second round.
Cheyenne Woods had to play one of the better players in the field this week in Auburn's Candace Schepperle. Schepperle was coming off a good showing at the US Women's Open last month and jumped out to an early 1-up lead with a win at the first hole.
The duo halved just three holes on the front nine and made the turn all-square. Woods then bogeyed No. 10 to fall 1-down and wasn't able to square the match the rest of the way, eventually falling 2 and 1 after Schepperle made a nice up-and-down at No. 17 front short right of the green.
Thursday will be a busy day for the players as the round of 32 will be played in the morning and the winners will then head right back out in the afternoon for the round of 16.
