TANAGURA, Japan - Behind a final round 69 from junior Natalie Sheary, the Wake Forest women's golf team posts a 293 and finishes second at the 2009 Topy Cup at the Tanagura Country Club in Japan.
Sheary came into the final round in 12th place after starting with rounds of 73 and 76. She then opened her round on Thursday with a birdie at the first and would make the turn at 3-under par. The West Hartford, Conn., native then played the back nine at even-par to card a 3-under 69. She finished the tournament in sixth place individually.
As a team, the Deacs rebounded from a tough second round to card a 5-over 293 on Thursday to finish the tournament at 20-over par and in second place behind the defending national champion Arizona State. The Sun Devils had the top-3 finishers in the tournament as Jaclyn Sweeney tied Sheary's final round of 69 to take medalist honors at 5-under 211.
Sophomore Cheyenne Woods led the team in each of the first two rounds with scores of 70-74 and would finish a shot behind Sheary in seventh after a final round 75.
Freshman Michelle Shin was making her collegiate debut this week and played quite well. She opened with a 1-under 71 and despite a 77 on Wednesday, the rookie finished tied for eighth with a 73 on Thursday.
Junior Allie Bodemann capped off a solid week with a final round 76. She opened with a 72 on Tuesday but came in with an 80 in round two. Bodemann finished the tournament in a three-way tie for 15th at 12-over par.
Bodemann is also coming home with the long drive championship. After Monday's practice round, the players participated in a long drive competition. Bodemann was the last competitor to go and she knocked a drive 280-yards down the fairway and eclipsed the previous-leader by four yards.
Also competing in her first collegiate tournament this week was freshman Stephanie Kim. She posted rounds of 76-78-77=231 (+15) to finish tied for 21st.
The team will leave Tanagura after the awards dinner Thursday evening and will spend all day Friday in the capital city of Tokyo before returning to the States on Saturday.
Wake will return to action in a little less than a month at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 9-11. The Deacs won the tournament last year by 16-shots over UNC as Sheary and graduate Jean Chua tied for medalist honors.
