ARDMORE, Ga. - Senior Brendan Gielow lost his only match of the day but the United States Team takes an 8-4 lead after the first day of the 2009 Walker Cup Matches at Merion Country Club.
Gielow did not participate in the morning foursomes matches as the Americans won three of the four tilts. Gielow then was paired against Stiggy Hodgson of Great Britain & Ireland in the afternoon singles.
The pair traded victories on the first four holes and remained all-square through seven. Gielow then birdied the eighth to take a 1-up lead and pushed the lead to 2-up at the turn with a par at the ninth.
Hodgson then won the 10th and 12th with birdies to even the match and took a 1-up lead with a par at No. 14. He then birdied the par-4 15th to go 2-up and the players would halve both 16 and 17 to give Hodgson a 2 and 1 victory.
The victory by Hodgson was the only singles win for the GB&I side in the afternoon, putting the visitors in a four-point hole heading into the final day.
There will be a total of four foursomes matches on Sunday morning followed by 10 singles matches in the afternoon. The Golf Channel will have live coverage of the singles matches from 4 to 6 pm.
