The Wake Forest volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to finish The Bash at the `Boro with an 0-3 record. Sophomore Kadija Fornah finished off the weekend with her first career double-double against Coastal Carolina Saturday evening.
The Deacons (0-9) dropped the first match of the day 3-0 to Auburn (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) and then fell in the nightcap 3-1 to Coastal Carolina (25-17, 16-25, 25-19, 25-16).
Fornah led the Deacons in the first match against Auburn with nine kills and three blocks. She then recorded her first career double-double against the Chanticleers with 11 kills and 10 digs. She finished the weekend with a total 34 kills, 15 digs and eight blocks.
Against Auburn, sophomore Carlin Salmon had three blocks to go along with her five kills and senior Abby Miller finished with 10 digs. Freshman Megan Carnell, making her second start of the season, dished out 18 assists and three kills.
The Tigers' Sarah Bullock led all attackers with 12 kills and no errors in the match. Christina Solverson and Sara Shanks dished out 17 and 12 assists, respectively as Kelly Fidero also had a good match, posting nine kills and four blocks.
As a team, Auburn hit a solid .319 with 42 kills while the Deacons hit just .106 with 31 kills. The Tigers also held a slim advantage in the defensive stats, leading 6-5 in blocks and 30-25 in digs.
In the second match, Wake and Coastal Carolina split the first two sets but the Chanticleers came out of the break and recorded 14 kills in each of the final two sets to close out the match 3-1.
Chelsy Kimes, Kelsie Mauck and Sierra Livesay all recorded double-doubles for CCU in the match. Kimes had 12 kills and 14 digs, Mauch posted 36 assists and 17 digs and Livesay added 10 kills and 12 digs.
For the Deacs, freshman libero Heather Kraft collected a season-best and match-high 26 digs while Abby Miller also chipped in with 16 digs.
Salmon and fellow sophomore Cambrey Oehler also had a solid matches against the Chanticleers. Salmon had a team-high 12 kills and four blocks while Oehler recorded 10 digs, six kills and two service aces.
Carnell and sophomore Maggie Hoey once against split the setting duties against CCU. Carnell finished with 21 assists, seven digs, three kills and three blocks while Hoey dished out seven assists and had four digs.
The Deacs had a season-high seven service aces in the match and outdug the Chanticleers 77-70. Both teams recorded a total of six blocks but CCU held an advantage in hitting percentage .198 to just .098 for Wake.
The championship match is being played this evening between host Georgia Southern and Auburn as both teams enter with 2-0 records on the weekend.
After two weekends on the road, the Demon Deacons will return home to host the Black & Golf Challenge next weekend. Wake will take on Duke at 7 pm on Friday evening in the ACC-opener for each team and will then face Appalachian State and Liberty on Saturday.
