WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team scored four goals in the first half and one in the second to hold back 18th-ranked Indiana 5-2 on Sunday during the first Demon Deacon home game of the season.
With the victory Wake Forest improves to 5-1 and Indiana stalls at 4-2.
Wake Forest dominated possession throughout the contest, out-shooting the Hoosiers 16-3 and holding a 10-0 advantage in penalty corner attempts.
The first half proved to be fast paced with lots of offensive movement for the Deacons. The Deacons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Raisa Schiller and Kaitlin Piosa converted on a penalty corner attempts.
In the 18th minute Indiana's Corey Brautigam scored her first goal of the season to get Indiana on the board. Less than a minute later Lena Gote teamed up with Alina Valenti to advance down the field on a breakaway and convert to knot the score at 2-2.
With 15 minutes to play before halftime Melissa Martin sent in a cross from Kaitlin Piosa during a penalty corner to push the Deacons in front 3-2. Faith Adams gave the Deacons some breathing room with a goal in the 30th minute, also scoring on a penalty corner. The goal was the sophomore forward's first of the season.
Team co-captain Kim Romansky scored the lone goal of the second half, converting on a penalty corner play. Penalty corner pusher Melissa Martin earned an assist on the goal, her fourth of the game.
Wake Forest will continue play next weekend, hosting Davidson on Sunday, September 20 at 1 p.m.
