WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team posted its first shutout since October 2008 on Sunday, taking down Davidson 6-0 at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem.

Wake Forest improves to 6-1 with the win and Davidson stalls at 2-6.

The Demon Deacons last held an opposing team scoreless on October 19, 2008, when Wake downed California 1-0 at Kentner Stadium. Sunday's win over Davidson was the largest margin of victory for the Deacons since November 2008, when Wake topped American 7-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest goalkeepers Julia Young and Kaitlyn Ruhf split time during the shutout, each logging 35 minutes.

Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill shook up the starting lineup dramatically. In her first start of the season, sophomore Kerry Ergen teamed up with Adelaide Knott in the forward position along with junior Alex Wolfgang-Price. In her first collegiate appearance, freshman Jillian Anzalone started in the backline for the Deacons.

The Deacons dominated possession in the first half, keeping the Wildcats from taking a single shot.

Wolfgang-Price scored her first goal of the season to get things cooking for the Deacons. The forward tapped in a shot from Cristen Atchison during a penalty corner play to move Wake Forest in front 1-0 in the 14th minute.

Kaitlin Piosa followed with her third goal of the season during another Wake Forest penalty corner. Lauren Greenwald assisted, as well as Faith Adams, who served as the team's pusher throughout the match.

Sophomore Kerry Ergen scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 23rd minute, tapping in a shot from Liza Casella, to put Wake Forest up 3-0 over Davidson.

Melissa Martin fired a rocket in the 28th minute that put Wake Forest up 4-0 going into the halftime break.

Davidson stepped up its offensive attack in the second half, recording four shots, with three shots on goal. Ruhf was in the cage for Wake and logged three saves.

Faith Adams and Liza Casella scored the final goals of the afternoon for the Deacons. Adams hammered in a rebounded shot from Melissa Martin in the 62nd minute, while Casella converted on a skillfully executed penalty corner play, with help from Lauren Greenwald and Adams.

Next weekend Wake Forest will play a pair of road matches, battling ACC rival Maryland at College Park on Saturday, September 26 and following with non-conference opponent American on Sunday, September 27.
