MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The Wake Forest men's golf team had a frustrating final round at the VCU Shootout, carding an 11-over 299 and finishing third at 15-over par. Senior Brendan Gielow finished second individually after a final round 75.

Wake came into the round in second place and trailed UNC Wilmington by nine shots. The Deacs made the turn at even-par and after the Seahawks struggled to open the day, Wake found itself just two back.

But a tough back nine did the Deacs in as they were 10-over par as a team in the final five holes. Wilmington would also struggle, carding a round of 301 but it was still good enough for a five-shot victory over Virginia, who finished at 13-over par.

"Today was a tough day to score," said Wake Forest assistant coach Dan Walters. "The pins were tough and the wind was blowing pretty good. We obviously didn't finish how we wanted but overall I think it was a pretty good tournament. We didn't feel like we played our best this week and we still had a chance to win. So we'll just take this finish and try to build on it."

Gielow held a two-shot lead starting the day and increased the lead to three by the turn thanks to a pair of birdies. It was a two-man race down the stretch as he and Charlotte's Corey Nagy were the only players under par. Like the rest of the team, Gielow struggled to keep the momentum rolling on the back nine and would make five bogeys coming in for a round of 3-over 75.

Nagy finished at 6-under par thanks a final round 70 and was two-shots ahead of Gielow who finished at 4-under par following rounds of 70-67-75.

After opening with a 3-over 75, freshman Evan Beck played pretty solid over the final two rounds, posting a pair of 73s to finish at 5-over par and tied for 24th. He made three bogeys and two birdies in his round on Tuesday.

Sophomore Lee Bedford was a shot behind Beck at 6-over after rounds of 75-72-75. He had made a total of nine birdies over the final 36 holes but also had 10 bogeys and a double. He finished in tie for 30th.

Senior Travis Wadkins and sophomore Daniel Meggs each finished at 11-over for the three rounds and tied for 46th. Wadkins opened with rounds of 76-74 and finished with a 77 on Tuesday while Meggs carded rounds of 74-77-76.

Freshman Charlie Harrison was playing in his first collegiate tournament as an individual this week and had a good start, posting rounds of 72-76, but started his final round with a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 16th and really never recovered. He went on to finish with an 84 and tied for 67th.

Wake will have a little over two weeks off before finishing the fall portion of the schedule at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges on Oct. 16-18. The Deacs finished third at the BOT last season.
