WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The women's cross country team opened the season in an exciting fashion by defending its title at the Wake Forest Relays. The team finished first with six points, followed by UNC Greensboro with 24 and High Point with 27 on a cloudless Friday evening at the Cross Country Trail located beside the Water Tower Fields on Wake Forest's campus.
Head coach Annie Bennett liked what she saw from this youthful squad.
"I was very pleased. We had a couple of young people who hadn't raced in a year and freshmen who stepped up. It was just pleasant to see their eyes up and their competitive nature," she said after the meet.
Sophomore Anna Nosenko notched the best individual two-leg 5-kilometer time of 17:14. Her total was four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, sister Dina Nosenko.
The team of Dina Nosenko and sophomore Casey Fowler grabbed first-place team honors for the event with a combined 5K time of 35:51. Anna Nosenko and newcomer Claire Hagler were the second team to finish with a time of 36:02.
Wake Forest boasted eight of the top 12 combined individual times, along with six pairs finishing in the top 10 groups.
Junior Marley Burns was fourth overall with a time of 18:02, and redshirt sophomore Caitlin Crawford placed fifth with 18:30.
Fowler finished sixth with 18:33, and junior Cate Berenato's time of 18:46 rounded out the top 10 totals.
"The athletes were speaking to each other as they passed one another, and communication is important. They did a really good job with that so I was very pleased with what our females did today," said Bennett.
Wake Forest has next weekend off and then has two meets scheduled for Sept. 18. Some team members will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational at 6 p.m. ET, while others will compete in the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn., beginning at 9:15 a.m.
