One year after recording top-10s at Waialae Country Club, both Webb Simpson and Bill Haas found the things a little different in 2010. Haas carded rounds of 73-75 and fell victim to the 36-hole cut while Simpson was around for three rounds but he fell victim to the 54-hole cut.
Simpson opened with rounds of 71-68 to make the cut at 1-under par. He was one of the 80 players to make the cut which fell at 1-over par. A new rule that the PGA Tour put in place two years ago allowed for another cut to take place after Saturday's round to try to ensure that the TV coverage would end on time. That cut pairs the field down to as close to 70 players as possible. Simpson's third round of 74 left him a couple of shots off that line.
The two players will continue the West Coast swing this week as the Tour heads to the mainland for the Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, Calif.
Senior Brendan Gielow was also in action last week at the Masters of the Amateurs event at the world famous Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Gielow played four solid rounds, finishing tied for 18th with scores of 74-75-74-75=298 (+10).
