WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Luca Gimenez scored his third goal of the season in the first half, but NC State equalized in the second half and neither side could find a goal in the two overtime periods as the game ended in a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons are now 5-6-2 on the year and 3-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Wolfpack also have a 5-6-2 record with an 0-4-2 mark in the ACC.

The game was also the Genna Wiley Memorial Match as Wake Forest honored the memory of Genna Wiley, the late wife of former men's soccer trainer, Steve Wiley. The Demon Deacons wore pink Nike jerseys, which were auctioned off in a silent auction held during the game. The auction raised $2,680 for the North Carolina Triad affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

With Wake Forest in front 1-0, the Wolfpack equalized in the 65th minute. A long throw in found Tyler Lassiter, who headed the ball toward the goal from the top of the 18. The ball found the foot of David Brown right in front of the goal and he finished from close range to tie the game at one.

The Demon Deacons had a great chance to regain the lead in the 70th minute. Andy Lubahn played a through ball to Gimenez, which put him 1-on-1 with the NC State keeper. Gimenez attempted to chip a shot over the head of the goalkeeper from the top of the 18, but the shot went just high of the goal.

Wake had another good look at goal in the 82nd minute. A corner from Ben Newnam found Lubahn six yards out at the left post. Lubahn aimed a header toward the right post, but Mackvick made a diving save to keep the game tied and send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Deacs had an excellent scoring chance in the 93rd minute. Luciano Delbono played a cross from the right side of the field near the endline. The ball found Newnam near the left post. Newnam's header was just wide left of the open goal.

The Wolfpack had a chance of their own in the 94th minute as Akil DeFreitas had a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box, but Fitzgerald made a diving save to his left.

In the second period of extra time, Sam Redmond had the best chance two minutes in as his attempt from the top of the 18 went right to Mackvick, who made the save.

Gimenez scored the third goal of his freshman season to lead Wake Forest offensively in the match. Fellow freshman Tolani Ibikunle assisted on Gimenez's goal, recording his second assist of the season.

Brown found the back of the net for the second time on the season. Lassister provided his team-best fourth assist of the season on Brown's goal.

Akira Fitzgerald made six saves on the night and allowed one goal in the 110 minutes of play. With his six saves in the game, Fitzgerald now has 212 career saves, which ranks fifth in program history.

Will Mackvick had four saves in net for the Wolfpack and also gave up just one goal.

NC State held a 17-15 edge in shots, and a 7-6 edge in shots on frame. The Deacs attempted seven corner kicks, compared to four corners for the Pack.

NC State had the first shot of the match in the sixth minute as Gbengha Makinde had a shot from the left flank that was saved by Fitzgerald.

Wake Forest came right back with a shot on frame in the seventh minute. A corner kick from Newnam found the head of Danny Wenzel, who attempted to put the ball inside the right post, but an NC State player headed the ball away to keep the game scoreless.

The Demon Deacons grabbed the lead with a goal from Gimenez in the 25th minute. Ibikunle played a pass from near midfield that found Gimenez just outside the 18-yard box on the left flank. Gimenez dribbled inside the penalty area and curled a shot from 16 yards out into the right side of the goal for his third goal of the season.

An outstanding save from Fitzgerald kept the game scoreless early in the second half. Makinde had an attempt from the center of the box that Fitzgerald made a diving save on to send the ball out for a corner kick.

Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday, October 23, traveling to College Park, Md., to face the Maryland Terrapins. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
